Chris Borrow of The Dram Team

Chris Borrow of The Dram Team

Here we are for the second installment of Dram Dialogues, and I’m delighted to announce that Chris Borrow from The Dram Team has answered my questions. When did you first get into whisky? About three years ago, when, at the last minute, I decided to save my sister’s boyfriend from flying solo for his birthday gift outing to a tasting at Milroy’s of Soho. At that time, I didn’t own any whisky and didn’t think I was a fan –…

Murray McDavid – Mission Gold Mortlach 21 Years Old

Murray McDavid – Mission Gold Mortlach 21 Years Old

The 6th and final dram of The Dram Team’s Incredible Indies box. Just 292 bottles of this gem were produced. The most prestigious 6th dram yet. Nose: Vanilla, lots of malt, chocolate, a little cardamom maybe, sweet honey. Treacle as it opens out, salted liquorice. Palate: So smooth! Chocolate. Salted liquorice here too. Cinnamon spice warms the palate. Apples, so sweet. Black grapes. We were definitely spoilt this time around with the 6th dram, and it was a treat. But at £180 odd…

Robert Graham – Hoebeg Islay Single Malt

Robert Graham – Hoebeg Islay Single Malt

Dram 4 of The Dram Team’s Incredible Indies box is this Islay malt from Robert Graham. The original distillery of the spirit is undisclosed. Bottled at 40% ABV. Nose: Proper smoke! Fireplace embers, leather, heather. A little TCP. Palate: Very smooth, lingering smoke, slightly oily, some citrus, light caramel, oak tingle Huge surprise this one. The smoky nose gives way to a very gentle palate and it’s actually very delicious to drink. Star of the box for me.

A Rare Find – Craigellachie 12 Years Old

Douglas Laing – Provenance Fettercairn 10 Years Old

Douglas Laing – Provenance Fettercairn 10 Years Old

Dram 2 in The Dram Team’s Incredible Indies box is this Fettercairn from Douglas Laing. Bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or added colours. Nose: Foam bananas, rosemary, lavender, a little oak. A little WD40 suggests itself. Palate: oily and mouth coating, citrus zings, ginger, watermelon Unfortunately this was rather underwhelming. It was as if the cask had been a little lazy over the 10 years and not imbued the spirit with much flavour or character.

Creative Whisky Company – Grain 10 Years Old

Creative Whisky Company – Grain 10 Years Old

Dram 1 from The Dram Team’s Incredible Indies box. This is a Grain, Girvan, I believe. Bottled at 50% ABV. This has been aged in a rum cask. Nose: Vanilla, Raisins, Stewed rhubarb. Pepper spice with some brown sugar sweetness. Palate: A lot smoother than the nose suggests. Still peppery though. Sweet with honey. Tart fruits on the edges of the tongue. Oaky lingerings with rum and raisin fudge.

The New Zealand Whisky Co. – 22 Years Old. 1992 Cask Strength

The 6th dram from The Dram Team’s #WorldwideWhiskies box is a real treat as usual. It’s a single cask offering, bottled at cask strength. As usual it’s only a miniscule amount (10ml) but great things come in small packages. Even more special is that this is a lost distillery. Bottled at 55% ABV. Nose: Damp clothes, red grapefruit, malt, freshly mown grass, vanilla. Palate: Quite oily, vanilla, candied ginger, lots of red grapefruit, vanilla, cinnamon, York Fruits. Oak. Finish: Spice…

Nikka – From the Barrel

Nikka – From the Barrel

Dram 5 from The Dram Team’s #WorldwideWhiskies box takes on a long haul flight to Japan. Japanese whisky has been winning awards aplenty of late, and this is no stranger to prizes. A real star. This is bottled at 51.4% ABV. Colour has been added. Deep gold in colour. Nose: There’s a sweet aroma the moment you pour this suggesting a powerful nose. Straight in with acetone, cloves, orange zest. Quite lively. Nose with caution. Pencil shavings. Brown sugar as…

Paul John – Brilliance

Paul John – Brilliance

Dram 3 from The Dram Team’s #WorldwideWhiskies box takes us all the way over to Goa, in India. Paul John have been releasing whiskies with an excellent reputation for a few years now but I’m yet to try one. The tasting notes with the box repeat the “Brilliant” word, so I’m expecting its nature to match its title. The barley for this was grown in the Himalayan foothills, and it was distilled and aged in Goa. The age of the…
