Dewars Aberfeldy Tweet Tasting

Dewars Aberfeldy Tweet Tasting

Last night saw my return to Tweet Tastings with The Whisky Wire. It’s been a little while due to other commitments, but it was good to be back. On the menu was a selection of malts from an unsung hero of a Highland Distillery – Aberfeldy. We had three drams to taste and review, so here is a summary of my thoughts. 12 Years Old Nose:¬†Stewed plums, sweetness, the plums give way to pineapple, There’s a malty/gristy aroma there, a…

Wemyss Malts – Melon Fan 1990

Wemyss Malts – Melon Fan 1990

This is the final dram of my generous prize from Wemyss Malts. It’s a 1990 Bladnoch, bottled in 2015, at 46%. Nose: Honey dew melon, oak, quite sweet, pineapple, maybe slightly sulphuric Palate: Honey sweet with oak, spicy, mango, a little leather Finish: Long, drying and spicy. This was enjoyable enough, but not my favourite of the 5 by a long way. The scores as follows: Nose: 7/10 Palate: 7/10 Finish: 8/10 Value for money: 7/10 Looks: 6/10 Giving a…

Wemyss Malts – Banquet of Fruits 1994

Wemyss Malts – Banquet of Fruits 1994

I’ve finally found a good reason to open this rather special sample sent to me as a competition prize by Wemyss Malts themselves: it’s a Sunday and I wanted a treat! This is a 1994 Aberfeldy single cask, bottled in 2015 by Wemyss. So it’s a healthy 21 years of age. Bottled at 46% ABV. Nose: Oak, woody mango. It’s quite prickly on the nose at first. Kiwi, tinned peaches. The oak fades along with the prickle as it opens…

Wemyss Malts – Oak For All Seasons 1994

Wemyss Malts – Oak For All Seasons 1994

Another single cask offering from the Wemyss Malts folks. This was distilled back in 1994 at Braeval and bottled in 2016. Bottled at 46% ABV. Nose: Pink grapefruit and maybe some orange zest. Plenty of vanilla. You can see where it gets the title from with a good smattering of oak. Hints of coriander. Palate: Honey sweetness with sharp pepper. Then you get the buttery mouthfeel and vanilla. Plenty of oaky dryness but it’s offset with the sweetness nicely. Finish:…

Wemyss Malts – Sea Haar Bound

Wemyss Malts – Sea Haar Bound

The lovely folk at Wemyss Malts sent me a care package just before Christmas as a prize for a competition they were running. I’m opening this one first. It sounds delicious. Mind you all the others do too. I fancied something maritime though. Behind the rather enticing name given by Wemyss lies a 17 year old Bunnahabhain single cask that was distilled in 1997 and bottled at 46% ABV back in 2014. It was matured in a hogshead. Haar means…

Claxton’s – Ben Nevis 17 Years Old

Claxton’s – Ben Nevis 17 Years Old

This is another independent single cask expression from the clever folks at Claxton’s. Distilled at the end of 1998 and bottled in 2016, this has spent 17 years under wraps in a hogshead (1608-1552). Available to buy here. This is bottled at 54% ABV. Nose: Lots of oak and alcohol as you open the door, but then you’re welcomed in warmly with assam tea, fresh figs, and honey. Vanilla punches through as it rests along with buttery toffee. This is…

Claxton’s – Bunnahabhain 14 Years Old

Claxton’s – Bunnahabhain 14 Years Old

Another treat from the indie bottlers Claxton’s. This is a 14 year old single cask Bunnahabhain. Cask No: 1607-3185. It was distilled in October 2002 and bottled in 2016. Bottled at 51.6 % ABV. Nose: Marzipan, buttery shortbread, sweet nectarines, a hint of wood. Lemon zest as it develops. A little lavender maybe as well. Palate: Oily and oaky with a little pepper. Lots of malted grain. Quite nutty. There’s an undertone of citrus just playing with the sides of…
