The Glenlivet – Nàdurra Oloroso Batch OL0816

The Glenlivet – Nàdurra Oloroso Batch OL0816

Part of the very popular Nàdurra range, this is a Cask Strength offering, without chill filtration or colouring. Nàdurra means ‘Natural’. Bottled at 61.3% ABV, this is one to be careful around. You may find adding water improves it for you. Nose: Acetone, almost melts the nose hairs! Be careful! Then bananas, freshly tanned leather. A little dried fruit. Let it stand for 20 minutes and you get sultanas, marzipan, milk chocolate. Adding water, and it can take a lot,…

Aberlour – A’Bunadh Batch 56

Aberlour – A’Bunadh Batch 56

This is one of those fabled drams I’ve been dying to try for ages. I am, therefore, very indebted to my very good friend Crask for sending me a good sample of this, the 56th batch of the A’Bunadh. A heavily sherried finish on this. It’s bottled at a powerful 61.2%. Nose: As soon as you pour, sherry notes waft through the air. Milk chocolate, raisins, hints of cinnamon, toasted walnuts, freshly cut straw on a hot day, that smell…

BenRiach – 17 Years Old – Pedro Ximinez

BenRiach – 17 Years Old – Pedro Ximinez

This rather delightful Speysider from BenRiach was finished in Pedro Ximinez butts after starting off in American oak. It’s another generous gift from Steve Prentice. It has a very deep colour, which is all natural which bodes well. Bottled at 46% ABV. Nose: Sherry in bags as you’d hope. Raisins, those candied almonds you find in Europe around Christmas. Vanilla. Palate: Oaky spice. Quite sweet with plenty of toasted nuts to compliment the predictable sherry notes. Finish: Sweet with oaky…

Tomatin – 1995

Tomatin – 1995

This rather special 21 year old limited release from Tomatin spent 18 years in refill casks before finishing in Oloroso Sherry hogsheads. 1912 bottles were released. Bottled at 46% ABV. Nose: You immediately get wafts of sherry when you pour. Sultanas soaked in sherry. Very good dark chocolate. A little marzipan. A little orange zest. Palate: Very waxy. Lots of oaky spice over mellow honey sweetness. Dried fruit again. The chocolate from the nose is there but in the background….

Bowmore – The Devil’s Casks II

Bowmore – The Devil’s Casks II

I’ve been saving up savouring this very special dram for a suitable occasion and decided that All Hallows’ Eve was more than suited to the job. This is a very limited release of whisky that has been matured in first fill sherry casks. It was released in 2014, and has an age statement of 10 years. Bottled at 56.3% ABV. Dark, almost ruby in colour. Very sherry-like, as you would expect. Nose: Immediately hit with smoky sultanas. There’s licorice there…

Canadian Club – Sherry Cask Small Batch

Canadian Club – Sherry Cask Small Batch

Dram 2 of The Dram Team’s #WorldwideWhiskies box takes me a small hop north to Canada to the very fine reputation of Canadian Club. One of my fellow tasters has had his head blown already by this dram, so to say I’m excited would be an understatement. “A luxurious sherry hug in a glass.” This is a blend and bottled at 41.3% ABV. It has colour added. Nose: Sultanas in bagfuls, lots of sherry as you’d expect. Marzipan. A little milk…

Benromach – 15 Years Old

Benromach – 15 Years Old

A huge thanks to the folks at Great Drams for sending me this as a competition prize. I can’t wait to get stuck in. But first, I have to tell you, that thanks to the clever Benromach website, I can tell you that my bottle was filled in Elgin on Saturday 1st November 2014. It has been sleeping in the bottle for nearly 2 years until I cracked it open 5 minutes ago. Aged in a mix of bourbon and…

Aberlour – 12 Years Old, Sherry Cask Matured

Aberlour – 12 Years Old, Sherry Cask Matured

As promised, here is the review of the 12 year old Aberlour I bought to share at a conference recently. This is a travel retail exclusive expression. Aged in Oloroso Sherry butts. Bottled at 40% ABV. There is no mention of filtering or colouring so I assume it has had both. It does have a very deep burnished colour. Nose: Immediately heady scents of sultanas and dates, lots of cereals too. Sweet apples push through. Fresh ‘pain au raisins’ just from…
