I’ve been skeptical about this whisky for quite a while. I mean, I drink whisky because I want whisky, and I drink beer because I want beer. I don’t really want my whisky to taste of beer and vice versa. But then everyone keeps writing complimentary reviews of this, and it was on offer in the local supermarket, so I bought a bottle. Dram 6 of the @spirit_speyside #Dram16Winners Tweet Tasting. 21yr and over category winner. 43.2% ABV. £139. Matured in Caribbean Rum casks. Nose: More hay and apples, my dad’s old leather satchel, definitely exotic fruits. Mango, pineapple Palate: Mellow and creamy, avocado, chilli, lemon, in fact… guacamole!
Dram 4 of the @spirit_speyside #Dram16Winners Tweet Tasting. 13yr to 20yr category winner. 40% ABV. £63.95. Matured in Oloroso sherry & bourbon casks. Nose: Spicy, malty, banana, that slightly burnt wood smell from a high power wood saw Palate: Much less spice than the 12. Quite sweet, banana in there, also kiwi, quite dry, aniseed balls.
Dram 2 of the @spirit_speyside #Dram16Winners Tweet Tasting. 12 Years & under/NAS category winner. 40% ABV. £30.25. Matured in American and European oak casks. Nose: Boot polish, malt, pineapple cubes, spice Palate: Mild pepper that grows as you go, malted milk biscuits, citrus, heather You can certainly see why this is a staple of the drinks cupboard. It goes down well, but for me there are more interesting drams at the price point.
