Four Roses Small Batch

Four Roses Small Batch

Massive thanks to Vin PF of No Nonsense Whisky for this sample. I actually tried it ages ago, but lost the notes, then found them again amidst a tidy up. Bottled at 45% ABV Nose: Classic bourbon nose. Vanilla, oak, brown sugar. Then some heather and mint as it develops. 7/10 Palate: Quite lively and prickly with chilli spice. Pepper too. Nuts, drying oak, but with sugary sweetness too. Well balanced. Some beeswax bitterness. 8/10 Finish: Long and warming with…

Maker’s Mark

Maker’s Mark

A staple bourbon – one you’ll see in so many popular TV series and films from America. Interestingly this has no rye in the mash. It has been replaced with Red Winter Wheat. This is to reduce the burn you get from rye and make it a lot smoother to drink. Bottled at a decent 45% ABV. Nose: Vanilla, malt, stewed fruits, brown sugar, artificial strawberry flavouring – like you get in strawberry laces. 6/10 Palate: Medium spice. Sweet, sugary…

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon

This bourbon contains a reasonably high proportion of rye, 72%. It’s unusual for a bourbon in that it has been triple distilled before maturation. Bottled at 43.2%ABV. Let’s see what it has to offer. Nose: Sweet with honey, oak, cut grass, vanilla, spicy pepper. Peaches and almonds as it develops. 8/10 Palate: Very oaky, pepper spice, a little leather, a little honey. Disappointingly lacking in depth. 6/10 Finish: Warming, but actually quite short with a little pepper. 6/10 Value for…

Eagle Rare – 10 Years Old

Eagle Rare – 10 Years Old

The people have spoken. Well 3 of you have anyway. I recently ran a twitter poll asking people to indicate which whisk(e)y I should mark my return to blogging with. You may have noticed this channel go a little quiet of late, but never fear, I’m still here. The whiskey the people chose, by 2 votes to 1 was this Eagle Rare, 10 year old. Bottled at 45% ABV. Excellent value for money. Nose: Oak, some vanilla, it’s a little…

Tincup American Whiskey

Tincup American Whiskey

This whiskey has a high proportion of Rye in the mashbill, but is profiled more like a bourbon. It comes with a neat tin cup as a lid, in keeping with the name. It exudes the classic Colorado style you see in the movies about the gold rush. Bottled at 42%ABV. Nose: Vanilla, fresh oak, almonds and a little mint 8/10 Palate: Fairy liquid, rye spice, quite sweet but very drying from the oak. I find the oak quite overpowering….

UK vs USA Tweet Tasting (Glen Grant, Wild Turkey)

UK vs USA Tweet Tasting (Glen Grant, Wild Turkey)

I’m very late to the party on this one! 22nd March saw Steve Rush of the Whisky Wire host a taste off with Glen Grant and Wild Turkey spirits in the ring. Due to a mix up on dates I was unable to make the night itself, but Steve very kindly sent me through the samples anyway, so here are my thoughts. Round 1 (ding ding) Glen Grant – 10 Years Old This is available for less than £30. Bottled…

Buffalo Trace – George T. Stagg 2016

Buffalo Trace – George T. Stagg 2016

I am incredibly lucky to have a small (3cl) sample of this incredibly highly sought after whiskey to try. Huge thanks to Master of Malt for giving me the chance to try it. George T. Stagg is one of a collection of very limited releases from Buffalo Trace called the Antique Collection. It consistently wins awards, having topped Jim Murray’s Bible at times, along with a plethora of other awards. Consequently the releases are incredibly over-subscribed, with bottles selling at…

Rebel Yell Bourbon

Rebel Yell Bourbon

This evening, being Election Eve in the USA was the perfect night for a big slice of liquid Americana. It came to us courtesy of The Whisky Wire and Rebel Yell Bourbon. Rebel Yell has distilled wheated whiskey since 1849. The Weller family were the first to produce Kentucky straight bourbon using wheat instead of rye in the mash bill. Over 150 years later and they are still doing it. In fact in 2017 they will be opening a new…

Canadian Club – Sherry Cask Small Batch

Canadian Club – Sherry Cask Small Batch

Dram 2 of The Dram Team’s #WorldwideWhiskies box takes me a small hop north to Canada to the very fine reputation of Canadian Club. One of my fellow tasters has had his head blown already by this dram, so to say I’m excited would be an understatement. “A luxurious sherry hug in a glass.” This is a blend and bottled at 41.3% ABV. It has colour added. Nose: Sultanas in bagfuls, lots of sherry as you’d expect. Marzipan. A little milk…

Michter’s US*1 Small Batch

Michter’s US*1 Small Batch

After a rather long delay I’m finally getting around to working my way through the 2nd The Dram Team tasting box – #WorldwideWhiskies My first foray into this fine world is Michter’s US*1 Small Batch bourbon. Bottled at a healthy 45.7% ABV. The accompanying card says “Like inhaling vanilla seeds off newly polished oak, then drinking a fresh infusion of Christmas spice and dark cherries… from an oaken chalice!” Nose: Loads of vanilla and oak, as expected. Cinnamon, dried cranberries,…
