Compass Box – Great King Street – Artist’s Blend

Compass Box – Great King Street – Artist’s Blend

This is a blended whisky from the folks at Compass Box. It’s the sort of blend that works neat and in cocktails, which in itself makes it quite a desirable bottle to have on the shelf. Compass Box are not shy in giving as much information as they legally can about the components of the whisky. In fact there is a graphic on their website which shows fairly accurate details of what’s there, along with the characteristics that malt gives…

Famous Grouse Blended Scotch Whisky

Famous Grouse Blended Scotch Whisky

In some senses it’s quite sad that this is my first dram of 2018. On the other hand, I have been suffering with a cold and didn’t want to risk my nose not working properly on something more special. I had a miniature available so thought I’d crack it open. As it happens, I was pleasantly surprised. Bottled at 40% ABV, chill filtered, and presumably with caramel for colour. Nose: Dried apricot, vanilla, something gristy and malty, slightly sweet with…

Eden Mill – Art of the Blend

Eden Mill – Art of the Blend

Last week I was fortunate enough to visit the Eden Mill brewery and distillery near St Andrews in Scotland. I went with a friend for a beer tasting and tour. It turned into more than I’d bargained for. We started off with a glass of cold beer and a chat about the history of the site they are on, as well as the history of the brewery/distillery. I won’t repeat it here – you’ll have to go along yourself for…

Compass Box – Spice Tree Extravaganza

Compass Box – Spice Tree Extravaganza

Who doesn’t like a blended whisky? You mean, you don’t? Why ever not? There are some cracking blends out there. Yes there’s some dross, but then there’s some horrific single malts as well. Compass Box have to be up there with some of the best blends on offer today, and the real clincher is the price. You often get so much more for your money if you opt to drink blended. Anyway, enough of the sermon, and on to the…

Prizefight Irish Whiskey

Prizefight Irish Whiskey

I saw this in Baggot Street Wines in Dublin and the very kind lady¬†gave me a nip to taste. A really interesting label design, and a very interesting whiskey to boot. It’s made by the folks at West Cork Distillers. Bottled at 43% ABV and finished in American Rye whiskey barrels. Nose: Vanilla, greengages, peppermint Palate: Very smooth, slightly oily. Vanilla and citrus. Some woody notes and gentle prickly spice. You can hardly taste the alcohol. Finish: This is where…

West Cork Blended Irish Whiskey

West Cork Blended Irish Whiskey

I found this in Dublin airport and had to give it a try. West Cork Distillers is responsible for some nice Irish offerings, I wonder what a blend will be like. This blend of grain and malts has been finished in bourbon casks. Bottled at 40% with colouring added. Nose: Quite a lot of ethanol initially. It’s quite harsh. Eventually there’s vanilla, green apples, and a little oak. Palate: It has that typical irish prickle. It’s quite sweet: sugar sweet….

Famous Grouse – Smoky Black

Famous Grouse – Smoky Black

This is a rebrand for the Black Grouse which has had some acclaim as a blend. The packaging claims to have Glenturret whisky in the blend, along with a specially selected gamut of others. Yes it’s a cheap blend. Let’s see if you get what you pay for. Bottled at 40% ABV and with colouring added. Nose: Initially foam bananas, vanilla, quite a lot of acetone which evaporates quite quickly. There’s hardly a hint of the promised smoke. The vanilla…

The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey

The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey

Back in the day it was traditional for Irish bars to bottle their own whiskey. This is an attempt to recreate that style. This is a blend of grain and malt whiskies that have been aged in bourbon and port barrels before blending. Bottled at 40%ABV. Nose: Elderflower, some white wine notes, stewed apples, some vanilla, a little tobacco. Palate: Creamy and sweet to start. Sugar sweet rather than honey. Then the palate dries with a little oaky spice. Pink…

Nikka – All Malt

Nikka – All Malt

Thanks to No Nonsense Whisky for firing me over this sample. Another of my 101 Whiskies list. This is Japanese blended whisky. It features Yoichi and Miyagikyo whiskies, along with some whisky that’s made at Myagikyo in a Coffey still, so it’s technically grain whisky, but it’s made from barley malt only. Bottled at 40% ABV and with colour added. Nose: The ethanol is quite strong to start, but it’s quickly replaced by cinnamon and chocolate. A little honey. Hints…

Nikka – From the Barrel

Nikka – From the Barrel

Dram 5 from The Dram Team’s #WorldwideWhiskies box takes on a long haul flight to Japan. Japanese whisky has been winning awards aplenty of late, and this is no stranger to prizes. A real star. This is bottled at 51.4% ABV. Colour has been added. Deep gold in colour. Nose: There’s a sweet aroma the moment you pour this suggesting a powerful nose. Straight in with acetone, cloves, orange zest. Quite lively. Nose with caution. Pencil shavings. Brown sugar as…
