Laphroaig – Select

Laphroaig – Select

On 25th January 2016 I was able to take part in The Whisky Wire’s tweet tasting of 4 Beam Suntory malts. We tasted Ardmore Legacy, Connemara, Bowmore Small Batch and Laphroaig Select. Laphroaig Select Nose: Wet dog, brine, slightly acrid, suggestions of much lighter notes initially. As it opens up fresh figs and prosciutto ham push through. Palate: Smoky and medicinal, but nowhere near as powerful as expected. Still puts short and curlies on your chest! When the initial smoke hit fades…

Connemara

Connemara

On 25th January 2016 I was able to take part in The Whisky Wire’s tweet tasting of 4 Beam Suntory malts. We tasted Ardmore Legacy, Connemara, Bowmore Small Batch and Laphroaig Select. Connemara Nose: Very briny with damp smoke, like a fire that’s just been put out with water. Oaky hints come through after a time with some leather. As it opens the smoke nearly disappears leaving marzipan and tropical fruits. Palate: Surprisingly acrid and sharp considering that it’s an Irish…

Ardmore – Legacy

Ardmore – Legacy

On 25th January 2016 I was able to take part in The Whisky Wire’s tweet tasting of 4 Beam Suntory malts. We tasted Ardmore Legacy, Connemara, Bowmore Small Batch and Laphroaig Select. Ardmore Legacy Nose: Smoke immediately as you’d expect. Dried fruits with a damp/musty hint. Grass progressing to damp hay as it opens up. Palate: Very light smoke in the background, but citrus tang and quite creamy. Not much burn so you can really roll it around your mouth. Finish:…

Redbreast – 12 Years Old

Redbreast – 12 Years Old

Nose: Oak with vanilla, light cinnamon spice, candy floss, burnt sugar, reminiscent of fairgrounds. Palate: Pepper hit to start followed by something I can only describe as urea, but it’s pleasant. An oaky dryness that is moistened by green apples. Finish: Short but not unpleasantly so.

Green Spot

Green Spot

Nose: Oak with vanilla, hints of acetone, rich tea biscuits, quite sweet Palate: Citrus tang, light oak comes through with some green apples. Quite drying but very smooth Finish: Fades quickly but pleasantly warming

Monkey Shoulder

Monkey Shoulder

Nose: Light oak, vanilla, dried fruit, hints of malted milk biscuits Palate: Slightly oily, creamy, spicy notes, tangy apples and sultanas, quite dry Finish: Short and quite dry

Bowmore – Small Batch

Bowmore – Small Batch

I was given a bottle of this as a gift. Here are my thoughts. Tasted on 15th January 2016. From Bowmore: “Good Things Come In Small Batches Exclusively matured in first and second fill ex bourbon casks, then blissfully married together, Small Batch exhibits the best qualities of both. First-fill bourbon offers delicious vanilla sweetness, subtle spices and bourbon oak smoke to complement Bowmore’s gentle peaty smokiness, while the second-fill cask enhances Bowmore’s fresh fruity complexity and showcases its trademark…

Murray McDavid – Spring 2016

Murray McDavid – Spring 2016

On 10th January 2016 I was incredibly fortunate to have been selected to try some of Murray McDavid’s Spring 2016 releases; 6 of them in fact. They were presented to us completely blind with the idea being that we’d taste them without prejudice. Two of them were mystery malts and we had a good go at guessing the distillery, the other 4 were not mysteries at all by the end, although some were very surprising. Here are my thoughts: 16-01 46%…
